Our Client wanted to install a bespoke metal framed glass lantern
on to the roof of their new garden room.
The Architectural Consultants proposals was to form a traditional
pitched roof shape but truncate it part way to form a large void
in the ridge.
We were appointed as Consulting Engineers to design the frame to
support the lantern and it's double glazed panels.
Our solution was to develop a small cranked steel frame which would
allow the construction of a cut roof below the lantern and allow
the lantern frame to be placed on a leveled timber plate above.
In this way were were able to provide the vaulted roof shape needed
which allowed for the open headroom and the light to enter while
limiting the shadows.
The client also wanted a vaulted ceiling in their bedroom to provide
acres of space making the room feel open and airy.
Because there was going to be no ceiling placed horizontally at
all our only option was once again to design a small steel frame
to bridge the space.
While deep we could have formed the hip rafters in timber or a
flitch beam but the client wanted no downstands into the space at
all; they wanted crisp clear lines. The only way to achieve the
necessary minimum structural depth was to introduce steel hip rafters
within the depth of the common rafters.
The overall effect was stunning and the Client was delighted with
the result.
