Structural Engineers Fees are often a concern for Clients, this may be because they can vary so very much, or because they had not understood that an engineer would be required.
As a Chartered Structural Engineer our Director is professionally qualified; the practice holds valid Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance. We are available for meetings during the working day between 0900 and 1700, and evenings and weekends by prior arrangement, to look after and deal with structural consultations, beam calculations and building advice.
Our usual charge out rates for residential design projects are as follows [Governments VAT now at 20%]:
Chartered Structural Engineer £75/hr + VAT [£90 inc ]
Assistant Engineer £55/hr + VAT [£66 inc]
Technician/Draughtsperson £31.5/hr + VAT [£37.80 inc]
Administration £12/hr + VAT [£14.40 inc]
Fees will depend on whether we need to make site visits, take dimensions, parpare drawings, any additional calculations [ie associated padstones, wall and foundation matters which may require attention as a result of the proposals]. Subsequently you may also ask us to attend meetings or make site visits during the site works.
As a "very" rough estimate - but depending on the nature and complexity of the project - our charges for comprehensive calculations are likely to be in the region of £75 + VAT per beam [£90 inc VAT], but may be lower smaller for larger projects where there are many elements to consider; even in structural design there are economies of scale.
It may also be necessary for us to visit site to take notes of any existing details before we can advise further. We would advise great caution about any 'engineer' who doesn't need to visit site to properly understand the existing building - they'll be relying on you to tell them roof and floor span directions and inform them of other crucial matters [eg other beams and walls and supports] that will affect the design.
For a more accurate fee proposal we would need a reasonable set of Architectural drawings, or at least a meeting on site. We can arrange to prepare drawings for you, or for more involved and complicated schemes you may need to appoint a architectural consultant directly to prepare these. For a list of Architectural Consultants with whom we work regularly, please go to our Architectural page.
We record the time spent on projects in great detail and very accurately. The program we use is called Timesheets MTS, which also deals with all of our fee requisitions/billing. It's an excellent application, We highly recommend it!!
